3 Best Clippers for Professional Dog Grooming
28 February 2025

To ensure we only ever give your dog the best grooming possible, we are very particular about which clippers we use in our studio. If you are looking for recommendations for the best dog clippers, here’s the ones we recommend and use ourselves.
Heiniger Cordless Clipper
The Swiss are known for their quality, whether their chocolate or cheese, and dog grooming clippers are no different!
Heinger Clippers have been manufactured in Switzerland for over 75 years, offering a powerful clipper capable of dealing with matted fur, but with a quiet motor that doesn’t overly vibrate so as not to cause distress to the dog.
We highly recommend cordless clippers, as they give you increased flexibility to groom. Corded clippers do still have their place, but the cord can become a danger around dogs, especially scatty dogs that are wriggling and moving around a lot.
The Heiniger Cordless Clippers have a battery life of about 120 minutes per charge, which is more than enough for nearly all grooms, but if you are planning on grooming multiple dogs like we do at the studio, make sure to keep them regularly charged between dogs.
You can buy battery chargers and spare batteries for the clippers, if you plan on using them regularly throughout the day. You don’t want them running out of charge mid groom!
Heiniger Clippers start from a few hundred pounds, up to circa £400 for the top level ones. If you are looking for a professional dog grooming experience with high-performance cordless clippers, this is excellent value for money.
WAHL Arco
We use Wahl Arco clippers in our dog grooming studio for detail work, and for small to medium breeds. They are excellent lightweight clippers, ideal for the face, feet and sanitary trims in sensitive areas. These clippers are great for nervous dogs as they are very quiet and with minimal vibration.
In our experience, the Wahl clippers have a run time of about 50 minutes, although they are supplied with 2 battery packs and charge up in just over an hour. It is easy to see the battery life left on the LED indicator.
The Wahl Arco Cordless Animal Clipper comes with a 5 in 1 set of blades, with adjustable length from 0.7mm to 3mm, with a blade width of 46mm.
These are great grooming clippers on a dog, and in certain circumstances can be used on other animals such as horses.
Whilst these clippers are excellent at detail and to provide the finishing touches, we would not recommend them for matted or thick fur. Not only will they not be very effective, they could risk harm to the dog.
WAHL KM Inspire
The third and final dog grooming clipper that we would highly recommend are the Wahl KM Inspire clippers. These are an affordable professional clipper that can be used on all coat types, including thick or matted fur.
Given this capability, they are not as quiet or vibration-free as some of the more precision, lightweight trimmers, but this is more than made up for with the added versatility. You can choose from two speeds, 3,000 SPM and 3,600 SPM, which gives you the perfect option for either high-to-low for trims or for full grooms.
The added benefit of the Wahl KM Inspire is that this cutting speed is maintained throughout thick or matted fur, whereas some of the lighter, less powerful options will slow down which could negatively impact the quality and safety of the grooming.
They come with 4 guide combs for added versatility, whilst the brushless motor keeps it grooming for longer, reducing the amount of time you will need to charge it.
Our summary of the best trimmers:
- For heavy duty thick fur, choose the Heiniger Cordless
- For fine detailing or small dogs, choose the Wahl Acro
- For a versatile all-around use, the Wahl KM Inspire is a great choice
