Our Professional Guide to Pomeranian Dog Grooming
17 June 2025

When it comes to Pomeranian dog grooming, there are a few specialist bits of information that you should consider before either attempting the groom yourself or even choosing a specialist to do it for you. Proper grooming is essential for the good health and comfort of your Pomeranian.
At Paws Grooming Empire, we know a thing or two about looking after these fluffy little pooches. Here’s our guide to looking after your Pomeranian.

The Pomeranians we see today are a tribute to the history of their evolution,
Pomeranians have a thick double coat, something the breed has naturally evolved. The undercoat is soft and fluffy, whilst the outer coat is straighter and harsher to the touch. It is around their neck and chest that the coat is at its thickest, helping to give Pomeranians their signature frill.
These coats are beautiful, but are subject to tangling, matting and a lot of seasonal shedding. You should never shave a double-coated dog like a Pomeranian. This can cause long-term damage and disrupt your dog's natural insulation.
Brushing
Owning a Pomeranian, brushing their coat will become a regular part of your routine. We recommend brushing your Pom at least two to three times a week, even more during the heavy shedding seasons in the spring and autumn. Use a combination of a long-pinned slicker brush and a metal comb for the brushing for the best possible results.
Look up the ‘line brushing’ technique, where you work through each layer of the coat all the way down to the skin, to ensure that you are not just brushing the surface layer.
To make the process more comfortable for your dog, consider using a detangling or conditioning spray to help soften the coat and reduce static.
Bathing
We recommend a full bath every four to six weeks as a good general rule of thumb. Always use a specific dog shampoo and never use the human alternative. There are coat-specific shampoos, and ask your vet whether you require any specific hypoallergenic options.
For Pomeranians, we recommend using de-shedding and volumising shampoo, as well as a protein-rich conditioner that is light enough to maintain volume but hydrating enough to protect the skin and fur.
After the bath, rinse thoroughly and blot dry with towels, but do not be overly vigorous. Similarly, do not use human hairdryers as these get far too hot for delicate dog skin. Instead, use a dog-specific blow dryer on a cool setting, with regular brushing as you go.
The details
Pomeranian grooming involves a lot more than just the fur. Don’t forget about the nail trimming, ear cleaning, teeth brushing, paw pad care and cleaning carefully around the eyes.
The regularity with which you will need to perform these grooming tasks will depend on your Pomeranian, but be proactive in checking your dog's requirements.
Poms are prone to dental issues, so a daily clean is ideal. Similarly, some Pom’s nails grow rather quickly, which if left untrimmed, can start to affect their gait.
